Alex Hibbert: Tiso TransGreenland Expedition

In 2008 Alex completed the longest fully unsupported polar journey in history. 7.5 million ski steps, 195kg sledges and temperatures in the minus thirties Alex and his team-mate, George Bullard, skied further than any previous polar expedition without support of any kind. Their journey took nearly four months and the team had to overcome tent fires, crevasse fields and ten days on emergency rations.

Rob Lilwall: Cycling home from Siberia

Polar Explorer and believer in “Education through Expedition” Antony Jinman will be joining us to talk about his experiences on Baffin Island, where he lived with and learnt about the Inuit people. His main aim was to report back credible eyewitness accounts of climate change and the effect it is having on the Innuit way of life. On the expedition he had many things to contend with from blizzards and gales to the coldest winter since 1970.

Alastair Humfreys: “Adventure means living the life you have always imagined”

Alastair a graduate of Edinburgh and Oxford has spent 4 years cycling around the world, raced a yacht across the Atlantic Ocean, canoed 500 miles down the Yukon River and walked the length of the holy Kaveri river in India. Alastair has published three books, with two more due by the end of 2009.He is now training for the Bob Graham Round and preparing for SOUTH, the first unsupported return journey to the South Pole and the longest unsupported polar journey in history.

Sarah Outen: Solo across the Indian Ocean

A recent Biology graduate of St Hugh’s College, Oxford University, Sarah is a keen sportswoman on and off the water, loves adventure, wildlife and the outdoors. This year she rowed across the Indian Ocean. Alone. Australia to Mauritius, 124 days, 3 world records, over 4,000 miles of open ocean, 2 oars broken oars, over 500 bars of chocolate and 20kg lost in bodyweight. “Raw and elemental – just as adventure should be.”

About the OUEC - OUEC exists to inspire, encourage and assist exploration within the University of Oxford. It’s something we’ve been doing for over 75 years, making us the oldest such Club in the world. To this day the Club leads expeditions that push back the boundaries of our knowledge about the world around us.Our members have now travelled to virtually every region of the world—yet there is still much to discover! Recent expeditions to Svalbard, Bolivia, Nepal, Madagascar, Papua New Guinea and Namibia have found new species of birds, insects and plants and assisted local people through a range of practical projects.The OUEC provides all the vital support needed for these expeditions – from equipment, experience and knowledge, to encouragement for all those participating.
