Courses and training for Expeditions
If you want your expedition to be a success, you need to make sure that you know what you’re doing. There are plenty of courses around that can help you ensure that you’re admirably trained for what you want to do, so make use of them, and book early!
First of all, you NEED proper medical training for at least one member of your expedition, as well as the mandatory Expedition First Aid Course for all expedition members here in Oxford. See the OUEC Expedition Medicine guide (available here to OUEC members) for details, and be prepared to send one of your number on a Wilderness Medical Training course (also see below and talk to the Oxford University First Aid Unit and OUEC’s Medical Officer).
The Royal Geographical Society offer a variety of seminars: the precise list varies from year to year and has in the past included entomological, herpetological and botanical training. This year’s list is available at the RGS Exploration Advisory Centre’s website, and includes seminars and courses such as:
Certificate in Off-Site Safety Management
Grants Forum
Projects with Local People
Wilderness Medical Training
Educational Visits Coordinator training
Geographical Information Science for fieldwork
They can fill up at an early stage, so if you are interested, do book as soon as you can.
