Resources for Expedition Planning

The OUEC exists to assist and offer advice in the planning of expeditions by students of Oxford University. In these pages we have collected a number of resources that may be of use to you. However, please do also contact us directly by email to discuss your plans.

This section contains:

  • Expedition Planning Guide
A brief overview of various aspects of expedition planning split up into readable chunks. Of particular use is the guide to submitting a proposal to the Oxford University Expeditions Council, the body that can give you official approval for your trip. Please note that proposals for summer expeditions must normally be submitted by around the 6th Week of Michaelmas Term of the preceding year, so start planning early!
  • Expedition Safety and Medicine
An overview of one of the most important aspects of expedition planning and practice.
  • Training
Many expeditions will require you to have skills that you do not currently possess. This page offers advice on how to get the training you require.
  • Carbon Offset
We highly recommend that you offset the carbon emissions associated with your expedition.
  • The OUEC Bulletin
Our annual publication holds reports from all of the year’s expeditions. Copies are kept at the RGS and the Bodleian, among other places. Recent editions are available to download online.
  • The Royal Geographical Society
The RGS is one of the most important resources available for potential expeditions. Our members can visit their expansive library and attend many events for free.
  • Useful Links
There are many other useful resources for inspiration and advice on the web. Here are a few of the best.
