Why join the OUEC?

As a member of the OUEC you’re becoming part of history. The club is the oldest of its kind in the World, stretching back to 1929 when it was set up by the famous explorers Sir Wilfred Thesiger, Colin Trapnell and Max Nicholson, who went on to set up WWF. But if that history isn’t enough to tempt you, there are plenty more reasons to get involved…

Free entry to all talks and seminars (usually £1/£2 each)
The club plays hosts to a varied range of speakers each term, all united by a passion for discovering, researching and exploring the far corners of the world and their inhabitants. They range from the celebrities – recently Benedict Allen and Dan Cruickshank, both of BBC-fame – to students who have returned from their own expeditions. In addition a number of seminars throughout the year provide a step by step guide to how to organise your own expedition.

Dine with our celebrated speakers
Club members are invited to come to dinner with our speakers before the talk. One to two members will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis to join the committee each week at formal hall.

Attend talks at the Royal Geographical Society for free
The club holds group membership for the Royal Geographical Society, which attracts the world’s top explorers and researchers. So if you’ve missed them in Oxford, you can catch them in London with our free-access passes. You can keep up to date with RGS events on our web site or at the official RGS site. Just get in touch to request a membership card (to be returned after use).

Delve into our unique records or browse our selection of travel books
The club holds an amazing record of reports and photos from all its expeditions stretching back to the start of the twentieth century. Immerse yourself in the first ever exploration to Greenland or catch up on more recent expeditions working on conservation in the Comoro Islands, recording folk music in Tibet….and many more. The club’s records are supplemented by stacks of past exploration journals and all are open to members.

And for expedition/ life members only….

Organise or join an expedition to anywhere in the World
We can give you all the advice you need to organise your own expedition. Via the Club you also will also be able to get the official support of the University of Oxford.

Loan any of our equipment
We have GPSs, tents, radios and more to loan out to expeditions for a pittance.

Benefit from experience
The Club committee and University Expeditions Council provide a support network for expeditions. We are here to give you advice on all aspects of your expedition from selecting your team and writing your funding proposals to ensuring everyone returns safely.
